What is wrong with free market communism?

If you eliminate the private ownership of equity (the private ownership of the means of production), you can still have free markets in goods and services between competing work collectives. You would just replace the system of private equity with a system of government banks. However, individual businesses would be controlled by the workers who could elect their leaders to run the company to compete in the market and provide income to the workers.
