How is Tom Robinson's death symbolic to Scout and Jem being attacked by Mr. Ewell in To Kill A Mockingbird?

My english teacher had asked me to write about How Tom Robinson's situation was symbolic to the end of To Kill a Mockingbird when Scout and Jem were attacked by Mr. Ewell. He said to think about what the characters are doing and what lesson the two situations show. Please help, thank you!
