BJ Penn loss to Frankie Edgar question?

I was gone for almost 3 months with no way to keep up to date news on MMA or Boxing. I was wondering since I missed out on Penn's title defense if he really got dominated like it seemed? OR was it a bad decision? Because I doubt the Penn of recent would get dominated, unless he was ill or something was going on in his life. Any answers will help.
